It's North Devon-100%.
There are now fewer than 400 days until the next General Election. North Devon needs a new Conservative MP who will step up and represent our area with energy and enthusiasm. So from now on, I want to devote all my time and effort to working with, and for, fellow North Devon residents on the issues that matter in our community.
For that reason, I have this week resigned my position as a Borough Councillor in Swindon. I now live permanently in Bishops Nympton and will dedicate the next year, and beyond, to working fulltime for North Devon.
A few months ago, some political opponents here tried to score points by complaining that I was still a councillor elsewhere. In fact, they just helped highlight the fact that I take my commitments seriously and don't shirk my responsibilities. Standing down sooner would also have caused an unnecessary by-election costing taxpayers thousands of pounds, which I refused to do.
For the last 14 months I have spent most of my time in North Devon; from now on, I will be here all the time. I will fight a positive campaign, 100% focused on the issues that matter. Working with fellow local residents in North Devon and fighting for our area will be my first and only priority.
Campaigning Hard!
Campaigning activities have moved up a gear as we head towards the European election and with the General Election little more than a year away. As you may have noticed, I'm doing more than just sticking leaflets through letterboxes. I'm knocking on as many doors as possible and asking people to fill in a residents' survey so I know what you think. The focus so far has been on villages in the south of the constituency. In the last week alone I've campaigned in Rackenford, Knowstone, George Nympton, Kings Nympton and Chittlehamholt. Watch out Ash Mill, Chulmleigh, the Ansteys, North Molton and Brayford - you're next on the list! We've also distributed several thousand leaflets in Bickington, Fremington and Roundswell. Soon the focus will switch to Ilfracombe and the north coast. One excellent outcome is that people are responding saying they're interested in becoming councillors. We've already found more than a dozen very good potential new candidates. If you're interested, please do get in touch.
Rural Seminar
Today I'm attending the North Devon Rural Seminar at Bishops Nympton, a few hundred yards up the road from my home. It's a chance for local people to discuss some of the big issues concerning our rural communities. These include funding for services, policing, planning and environmental issues. I'll be writing a full report for next week's newsletter.
What do you think?
I really want to know your views about a number of issues . What matters most to you and your family and to the country as a whole? Please spare a couple of minutes to tell me here www.conservatives.com/survey
Many thanks.
Until next week......
