Chulmleigh Community College
This week I’ve been asked to intervene to help secure funding for a vital building project at one of North Devon’s schools.
Back in April I was invited by Sue Croft, the Conservative District Councillor for Chulmleigh, to visit the excellent Chulmleigh Community College. This is a school which is undergoing a massive and welcome transformation. Decaying post-war classrooms are being replaced by modern, sustainable facilities fit for the 21st century. As the photo shows, I was given a tour of the huge building project by the Headteacher Michael Johnson. He and Cllr Croft, and the rest of the community, are rightly proud of the fabulous new facilities taking shape there.
The College is part of the Chulmleigh Academy Trust, which serves a wide catchment area across a swathe of the North Devon constituency. This means the new investment will benefit a great many people; and not just families with schoolchildren, because many of the facilities will be available for everyone to use. I was greatly impressed by what I saw and asked to be kept in touch.
Unfortunately, we have now heard that the bid for funding for Phase III of the development has been refused. The decision has been made by the Education Funding Agency, the body which now manages most schools spending. The EFA, who have been supportive of Chulmleigh up to now, have said they need more assurances about the next phase of the development. Whilst this is understandable, it is also disappointing.
I have been asked to assist, and so have this week invited a senior government minister to visit Chulmleigh to see just how vital it is that the project goes ahead. I am also making representations to ensure that the ‘powers that be’ have this matter firmly on their radars.
I’ve always said I will fight hard to get the investment we need in North Devon – especially in the rural areas and in education – so this is a project I will keep pushing. I’m delighted to have been asked to help with this important task for a school which serves the North Devon community with such distinction.
Tourism – Your Views Please
The summer holidays are nearly upon us – even the weather hasn’t been too bad recently – and that means the tourist season is in full swing. It’s a vital part of the whole North Devon economy, providing the livelihoods for many people.
Recently I spent a day in Lynton delivering hundreds of copies of a residents’ survey. I took the opportunity to talk to many small business owners who run hotels, bed & breakfast establishments or other holiday accommodation, as well as associated tourist services.
They were largely optimistic and welcomed the more positive economic news we have seen recently. Bookings for this summer were reported to be generally strong. However there were some concerns expressed to me, including the rate of VAT and the impact of online booking services, for instance.
I would be interested to hear from you if you are involved in any way in ‘the tourist industry’. What changes would you like to see? How is business? What could the government do to help you? Please let me know; my email address is[email protected]
Tourism is vital for the whole of North Devon, whether or not you’re personally involved, so I will always work hard to support this vital sector of the economy.
Barnstaple, Stand By!
Finally, a teaser. If you live in the Barnstaple area, you could soon be receiving a new magazine which we’ll be delivering to around 20,000 households. It talks about many of the important campaigns I’m working on, asks for your views, and even includes the chance to win a fabulous meal at one of the town’s best restaurants. More details soon!
