Wind Turbines – a step forward!
I warmly welcome this week’s announcement that the next Conservative Government will end public subsidies for new wind turbines and give local people more power in the planning process. The Conservatives would also change the rules to give greater protection to an area’s valued countryside and heritage. These changes would be delivered by a Conservative Government within six months of the next election and should mean fewer speculative applications for turbines in North Devon.
This is a major victory for commonsense and is excellent news for us here in North Devon. I have consistently called for local people to have more say in the planning process, especially when new wind farms are being proposed. I’m already working with residents on a number of specific projects to ensure their voices are heard, so these changes will make a real difference
Only the next Conservative Government will scrap the current generous subsidies given to new onshore wind farms, and give local communities the decisive say on them. This will give us a much fairer system, and will mean we have the power to protect our heritage and natural beauty here in North Devon.
North Devon Plus
Last week I visited North Devon Plus to meet members of their senior team. This is an important organisation which does more vital work than many people realise. They are active in a number of areas including promoting the tourism industry, encouraging business investment and running schemes for apprenticeships, to name just a few. We discussed the importance of sending the clear message that North Devon is ‘open for business’. I also raised concerns about the funding of Tourist Information Centres, which has been in the news recently.
Perhaps the most public-facing element of the work of North Devon Plus is the publication of the annual North Devon and Exmoor Visitors Guide and its associated website, www.northdevon.com. This impressively comprehensive brochure and website contain a wealth of information which is just as useful for us residents as it is for visitors, and I would encourage you to take a look. I will be keeping in touch with North Devon Plus and the work they do.
European elections
It’s now less than four weeks to polling day – Thursday 22nd May 2014. Every household will be receiving information about the Conservative candidates and their policies, and I would encourage you to read it and think very hard about your vote. I will not use this newsletter for blatant campaigning (not yet anyway!), but it goes without saying that I hope people will look carefully at what the Conservatives are saying, and see beyond the rhetoric – and the posters - of the other parties.
