Barnstaple Traffic
As you may have seen on the front page of this week's North Devon Journal, I'm working with Cllr Simon Harvey to try and get something done about the traffic problems in and around Barnstaple. Anyone who's tried to drive through or close to the town recently knows how bad the traffic has been. The road works at the Roundswell roundabout are one factor, but there's a long-term issue too. I'm working with Simon and other councillors in Barnstaple to ensure that Highways officers in far-away Exeter don't forget about the traffic problems here. My understanding is that a review of the town centre traffic arrangements is overdue, and it's important this happens. I'll be writing to the Leader of Devon County Council to make this point.
Calvert Trust
On Wednesday I visited the Calvert Trust at Kentisbury. This is a truly inspiring place. In case you don't know, they provide activity breaks for people with disabilities, together with their friends, families and carers. Because of the clever way the site has been designed, and the expertise of staff and volunteers, it is fully accessible for people of all ages with physical, sensory or learning disabilities. It's set in a stunning location on the edge of Exmoor overlooking Wistlandpound reservoir - as you can see from the photo which shows my meeting with the CEO Tony Potter. They have thousands of guests a year, both day visitors and those who stay in the five-star on-site accommodation. Activities include abseiling, climbing, horse riding, sailing, archery, bushcraft....it's hard to describe the full range of excellent work which is being done there, you really have to see it for yourself.
The Calvert Trust is a registered charity, and all the money they raise goes towards bursaries to help cover the costs of the guests' visits. They are looking for new ways to highlight their work and find new supporters. They have a wonderful new function room with far-reaching views (again, see photo!) which is ideal for groups, businesses and other organisations to hire for conferences, meetings, away days, etc. Please get in touch with them for more information.
I have promised to do all I can to promote their work, because the Calvert Trust is truly something of which North Devon can be proud. They are deservedly on the final shortlist to win TWO categories in this year's Visit England awards - the only North Devon business to achieve that. Their website is at www.calvert-trust.org.uk/exmoor.
